One Day Sesshin Tenken Schedule

5:30 arrive, open building

5:55 light altars for opening:  main altar, large candle, votive candle, two sticks of incense. Large candle by Buddha on back table.   

10 Minute Han

6:00am zazen (opening with robe chant, early morning bells, and priest's jundo)

(Ino or Doan does big bells w/prostrations, Tenken does 3 bells with doshi after jundo: o at mat, o towards seat, oaway from seat, ends zazen with 2 bells)

6:25am orientation (if short orientation, do short kinhin until 6:35)

6:35am zazen (Three bells to start zazen, two bells to end)

7:00am kinhin (Strike clackers once to start kinhin. X   Some people exit to bathroom. Strike clackers to end kinhin, walk back to your cushion and lead bow to sit.)

7:10am zazen (one bell to end zazen)

7:37 light altar for service: all four,  yes kobako, two incense sticks out

7:40am service (Play mokugyo for chants in Japanese)

8:00am Soji (Temple cleaning coordinated by work leader)

8:15am oryoki breakfast (Ino will clack twice at the end of closing breakfast chant. Tenken: follow immediately with two bells. Then do exit bells:  doshi bows once at mat, DING; doshi steps back and bows again, DING; doshi and jisha exit, DING DING. 

9:00am break (Extinguish altar)


9:48 light altars for opening:  main altar, large candle; lobby altar, candle, two sticks of incense.   

9:50 Ten Minute Han

10:00 zazen (three bells with doshi:  o at mat after incense offering, o towards seat, o away from seat)

10:30am kinhin (Strike clackers once to start kinhin. X   Some people exit to bathroom. Strike clackers to end kinhin, walk back to your cushion and lead bow to sit.)

10:38 light altar for Dharma Talk: candles all four,  one incense stick out,  no kobako 

10:40am Dharma Talk (no jobs, give small bell to Ino)

11:30am kinhin (begin kinhin after Dharma Talk regardless of time, then work with Ino to get back on schedule)

11:40am zazen (three bells to start zazen, one bell to end)

12:08  light altar for service: all four candles,  yes kobako, one incense stick out

12:10pm service (Metta Sutta) (no jobs for tenken)

12:20 oryoki lunch (see oryoki breakfast for bells)

1:00 break (extinguish altar)

1:50 Ten Minute Han

2:00 zazen (three bells with doshi:  o at mat after incense offering, o towards seat, o away from seat)

2:30 kinhin (Strike clackers once to start kinhin. X   Some people exit to bathroom. Strike clackers to end kinhin, walk back to your cushion and lead bow to sit.)

2:40 zazen (three bells to start, two bells to end)

3:10 kinhin (Strike clackers once to start kinhin. X   Some people exit to bathroom. Strike clackers to end kinhin, walk back to your cushion and lead bow to sit.)

3:20 zazen (20 min period, start with three bells as usual but head tea server ends with clackers, no ending bells)

3:40 tea (Ino ends tea with 2 clacks, tenken follows with 2 bells)

4:00 kinhin (20 minutes)(Strike clackers once to start kinhin. X   Some people exit to bathroom.

Strike clackers to end kinhin, walk back to your cushion and lead bow to sit.)

4:20 zazen

4:58  light altar for service: all four candles,  yes kobako, one incense stick

4:50 service (Dai Hi Shin Dharani) (play mokugyo)

5:00 dinner break (extinguish altar)

7:40 zazen (3 bells on your own to start, 2 to end)

8:10 kinhin (Strike clackers once to start kinhin. X   Some people exit to bathroom. Strike clackers to end kinhin, walk back to your cushion and lead bow to sit.)

8:20 zazen (3 bells on your own to start, 1 to end)

8:50 refuges (get ready at end of third repeat: ring bell once as priest bows, two rings as exits, lead final bow when sangha is ready to leave the zendo)

9:00 end of day (extinguish altar)
